Mexico is one of the most developed countries in Central America in terms of Internet technology, as it's a pioneer in employing local loop unbundling in the area. However, telephony sector has not yet fulfilled its potential, as the fixed-line penetration remains only about 20% of the territory, and mobile penetration is still about 70%. On the other hand, this provides ground for further progress and development. Mexican telephony market is not yet fully liberalized and is guided by two different monopolies in landline and mobile sectors. Fixed-line industry is led by Telmex, previously a state-owned monopoly, which now accounts for almost 89% of total market share in the sector. Mobile telephony market is dominated by Telcel, with 72% of market share. Still, other market players demand healthy competition, and current situation in the industry remains under control of the governmental regulatory body. Its actions, however, cause negative reaction on the side of leading players. The main technology used is GSM, and the number of subscribers applying to it is gradually growing. Due to high market potential the growth will remain steady in the next several years. Average revenue per user tends to decrease during the last two years, but will stabilize, according to research papers.

Fixed-line telephony is continually suppressed by mobile sector, and has seen steady decline during the last several years. However, its regress has recently been stopped by implementation of new Internet technologies, and the number of subscriptions began to increase. The main players in the mobile sector are the already named Telcel, leading the market, followed by Movistar, Nextel, and Iusacell. The Internet market is overcoming a boost in broadband technologies. The number of subscribtions is gradually increasing and promises to stay high. Still, the penetration tends only to 10% for the broadband technologies. The newly introduced and highly popular is WiMAX. Connection speed available is up to 6 Mbit/s, characteristic for cable Internet, and up to 4 Mbit/s for ADSL technology. Telmex holds its competition in the Internet sector as well, and is characterized as a leading Internet service provider, namely in ADSL sector. Its competitors are Avantel, AE-Go, Terra, Alestra and Maxcom.
